It’s always exciting when Dr. Renick says the bite is looking good and we’ve placed finishing wires in or we’re on the final sets of aligners. This usually begins the last couple of visits to the anticipated deband appointment when the appliances or attachments are finally removed! At this point, the final steps are often in the hands of the patient and are related to elastic wear to finish the bite. The last sequence of appointments will depend on the progress involved with the bands.
A deband sequence of appointments will be set up. There is usually a “check to deband” appointment which is to assess the progress of the final step. If the bite is good and the Dr. Renick and the patient/parent are satisfied that the goals have been met, the final deband appointment will be scheduled. A retainer appointment will be scheduled on the same day to deliver the retainers to hold the final result. Occasionally, the deband procedure may be staged, but as this tends to be less common, the doctor will provide special instructions if this is the case. The retainer appointment part of the debond day will include instructions on how to take care of the retainers to maintain the healthy, functional smile treatment has achieved.
