Hawley

Hawley retainers are the “traditional” retainers that more of the older orthodontic patients may remember. Over the last thirty years, the Essix retainers have gradually been replacing this type of retainer.

Hawley

The traditional Hawley retainer has an acrylic base and a wire that lays across the front of the anterior teeth. The anterior bar crosses behind the cuspids. Clasps around the molars are usually included to add retention. This retainer can include fake teeth or block outs in areas that are waiting for implants and bridges and is just as durable as their Essix counterpart. One of the advantages to this type of retainer is that the bar can be adjusted to address minor rotations. Small springs for tipping movements can be included as needed. In addition, in cases of deep bites or grinding, a bite plate can be built into the retainer to help protect the teeth.

Hawley

One disadvantage to this type of retainer is that the bar can get bent when putting it in or taking it out of the mouth. In these situations, the patient may not notice the bend until the teeth have shifted. This is usually an easy fix to regain the alignment with a quick visit to the office to see our orthodontist, Dr. Renick, to readjust the bar. Similar to the Essix retainer, these are removable and it is recommended that they be worn full time for at least the first six months before reducing the time to night time only wear. Instructions for proper care of the retainer will be given at the time the retainer is delivered and are also available on the website under the Patient Education/Care for your Retainer section.
